High School Interns

High School Interns are volunteers placed at designated ASDP Sites who are striving to earn a credit toward graduation. These hours must be recorded by Site Supervisors on the Davidson County Internship Time Sheet. This commitment by high school students is important to them and we need to appreciate and value their interest by maintaining an accurate record on their behalf and guide them toward learning about working with children. The Internship Time Sheet should be handled the same way as counselor time sheets and turned into the Program Director weekly.

High School Interns are volunteers and are not: left alone with children,  expected to initiate our program, handle discipline issues without assistance, address issues with parents, or administer first aid. These are the responsibility of the Supervisor and Counselors.

How to apply:
Fill out the YMCA volunteer application, return it to the YMCA Sr. Program Director.  An interview will be set up for you and you will need to abide by the YMCA policies and philosophy.

General Responsibilities:
The Program Intern is responsible for completing projects and reaching goals set in cooperation with the Senior Program Director. The intern will work in various programs and departments to gain an understanding of the day to day operations of the Association. The Intern will help to promote the YMCA Mission in the communities which the YMCA serves and will provide leadership in areas assigned.

Responsible To:
The Program Intern will be supervised by the YMCA Senior Program Director and any staff person in whose department the Intern works. The performance of the Intern will be evaluated by the Senior Program Director and any supervisor assigned by the Senior Program Director.

Specific Duties:

  • Work with the YMCA Senior Program Director or designated person to learn the Mission of the YMCA, and how that Mission is put into practice.
  • Work with the Senior Program Director to set up tasks and goals within the program structure of the YMCA which you will fulfill.
  • Take on specific projects and duties to insure that programs are run efficiently and serve that purpose of the YMCA Mission.
  • Represent the YMCA to the participants of programs in which you are involved.
  • Attend YMCA staff meetings and be ready to report on the activities which you are responsible to accomplish.
  • Keep the YMCA Senior Program Director informed of your progress and of any difficulties you encounter.
  • Interact in a positive manner with the members and participants of the YMCA.
  • Agree to the YMCA policies on Child Abuse Prevention and practice them.
